History of String Instruments

Of all string musical instruments, the "classical" string instrument that we call the violin would arguably be the most familiar to the most people on any list of string instruments. Renowned in the history of string instruments and instruments of the orchestra, the violin's renown first grew among the Renaissance instruments, although at first among the "classical" music instruments of later decades (really the early Baroque period) it was considered to be a symbol of low social status before the efforts of composers like Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi and the performances of groups like King Louis XIII's 24 Violons du Roi the violin began to gain the respect that it enjoys in such great abundance today.

The fiddle and the lira da braccio (another Renaissance instrument) seem to have been the two immediate precursors to the violin. However, the Indus Valley string instruments known as the ravanstron, the rabab, and the rebec trace their start all the way back to 5000 B.C.E. and these bowed string instruments, too, are apparently precursors to the violin. Probably the very earliest direct ancestors of the European violin, however, can be traced back to the 9th century in Asia. All string instruments began as types of bows and were plucked. Today, the violin is actually played with a bow (though plucking the strings with the technique known as "pizzicato" is used to get a staccato effect from the violin). The rabab and ravanastron could also be bowed or plucked, and became widely used in percussion-accompanied dance music throughout the Indus Valley, Persia, North Africa, and later on Arabia.

By the 11th century, Europeans had invented the the vielle and the rote, both of which are also known to be violin ancestors and both of which were derived conceptually from the zither, one of the first ancient string instruments that was played with a plectrum as the modern non-classical guitar is. It was during this time with these instruments that the fingerboard was added so that string instruments could be played with either a bow or by plucking with a plectrum or the fingers in "pizzicato" style. The fingerboard also allowed new notes to be produced by the fingers placing stops at various places along the length of the strings to allow higher or lower vibrational frequencies. The vielle and rote may well have been modeled on the Muslim Arabic rebec of visiting merchants from North Africa or the Middle East. The rebec includes a half-pear shaped body, a fingerboard, a box with tuning pegs, tuning in 5ths, three strings, and the necessity of being played with a bow while being held against the breast or shoulder.

It was during the Baroque period, considered the first "classical" music period of Western Europe and the modern world and dating its start to 1660, that the violin really began to soar. Antionio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Georg Philipp Telemann were the three greatest Baroque period violin music composers. The luthier artistry of Antonio Stradivari, Guiseppe Guarneri, and Jacob Stainer began creating magnificent-sounding violins during this period and on into the subsequent Classical period. It was during the Romantic period of the 19th century with the emergence of performers like Niccolo Paganini that the now-famous violin virtuoso emerged, with the works of Classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven having paved the way for them to rise.

Today, of course, the ability to play the violin well is considered a mark of good breeding or a sophisticated education--not low social status!

Pour la première fois lors de l'interprétation de cette chanson, Angelo semble être plus contenu (moins fou !) et les différents instruments se détachent avec plus de netteté. « La pulce d'acqua » 83 n'est pas ce fouillis musical auquel nous avions droit dans les années 70, et pour la première fois avec un solo de violon alors que nous pensions que la fête était terminée... Le solo de violon enchaîne naturellement sur la fin de l'oeuvre musicale, ce fut un très grand moment. Blue-watery environment on scene, it was my great memory in concert 83: "La pulce d'acqua". The rhythmic one was that of 78 but the orchestration is well in tendency 83. For the first time during the interpretation of this song, Angelo seems to be more contained (less insane!) and the various instruments are detached with more clearness. "La pulce d'acqua" 83 is not this musical tumble to which we had right in the Seventies, and for the first time with a violin solo whereas we thought that the festival was finished... The violin solo connects naturally on the end of musical work, it was very a great moment.

Alto Saxophones

A saxophone is a musical instrument that belongs in the woodwind category. It is one of the youngest musical instruments, having been invented in the 1840s by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian. Saxophones were earlier used in the military and in big orchestras but are now found in smaller bands as well. The main parts in an alto saxophone are: the mouth-piece, including the ligature and the reed; the main tube that has tone holes and keys; a series of rods that connect the keys to the tone holes; the pads that securely cover the tone holes and, most importantly, the bell.

The local music store, mail-order service, a private party or the Internet are different places where one can buy alto saxophones. The main aspects to be considered are the quality, service, price and the model. The Internet is a good source to find information about alto saxophones, but it is wise to test a few of them before buying.

Ages to Start a Musical Instrument With a Child

Here's a bonding idea for you: learn to play a musical instrument along with your child.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, but it might work in your house. In our case, I put off beginning piano lessons until my daughter turned five, now a year ago. Apparently, five is the age when kids should start piano, unless they have exhibited Mozart-like tendencies play Schubert by ear on the local baby grand. In a recent unofficial poll, 47% of people who play musical instruments started playing between the ages of four and ten.

The BBCsite has a good guide on ages to start playing different instruments based on the size of the instrument, and the lung or body strength required, in brief:

o Recorder - often recommended as a starter instrument, can be played as soon as child can get fingers over the holes
o Violin - could start at 4, but 6 is more realistic
o Wind and brass - not before second set of teeth are in
o Guitar - comes in smaller sizes and can be played as of age eight, depending on size and stretch of hands
o Singing - formal lessons not advised until teens, after voices are more developed

Ideally, in all of these cases, the child should be able to recognize numbers and know letters through G, for obvious reasons.

I found a teacher who bought into my idea of learning along with my daughter, or who at least humored me in my plan. At our first lesson, she met my daughter and me, let us plunk around on the keys, and ordered us beginner books. I did not get the one with zoo animals playing in a band, I got the more austere-looking AdultPiano Adventures.

On our second lesson, it was clear there was something wrong with my plan. My daughter banished me to the waiting area and conducted her part of the lesson in private. I was allowed five minutes at the end to show what I learned. This continued on for weeks on end, until we finally broke up our "lesson." I went on to take 45-minute bi-weekly lessons and she changed teachers for a more convenient, and private, at-school lesson. Which leads me to several things I found out about kids and learning music:

1. Wait until they are ready to learn. Unless your child appears to be a prodigy, and you're likely to see this right away, wait until at least age five to begin lessons. Some even recommend six or seven depending on the facility reading and counting.

2. At the beginning, remove any pressure to play and practice. You'll have plenty of time to spoil the love of music later when you force her or him to play four hours a day. For now, let your child play when he or she wants to. As time progresses, start with putting the child at the piano for five minutes per day and advancing from that as lessons start to take hold. Try to make music as fun as possible, and that means stopping your playing to let them in. If they want to play, let them at it.

3. Make sure your child really likes the teacher. If not, run, don't walk, to another instructor.

4. Create occasions for your child to play in front of people, with the proper warning. Our child, while not usually a performer, was relaxed playing for family when she knew and bought into the concert idea several months in advance.

5. Don't expect you'll be able to play with your child or help teach them, or you may be disappointed. I always let my daughter join me if she wants to play while I'm practicing, but I've failed miserably several times to show her how to play "her" music.

6. If possible, find easy one finger arrangements of songs your child likes. While a certain amount of instruction in the building blocks is key, there is nothing as motivating in music, to both adults and children, as playing a song that they know and love.

Choosing Which Brass Musical Instrument to Learn

Choosing a brass musical instrument to start playing may seem quite a daunting prospect. There are several factors to keep in mind such as cost, the player's physical size and weight capabilities and availability of teachers of that instrument (there are some very good online databases to assist you in finding qualified teachers in your area). The key consideration to bear in mind when choosing a brass instrument is that playing it should be fun! It's a good idea to choose your instrument according to which genre of music you like. For example, if you want to play jazz, there is no sense in learning the euphonium, whereas trumpets are popular in all genres. Some musicians get a kick from playing in an orchestra. Others opt to go solo. It's a good idea for the budding musician to keep in mind at the outset an idea of the general direction he would like to go in. After all, what started out as a hobby may flourish to become a lucrative career, and what better than to be paid for playing the music you love!

Musical Genres

A classical symphony orchestra will usually feature tenor trombones, a bass trombone, a tuba, trumpets and horns.

A traditional brass band will incorporate a soprano cornet, euphoniums, a bass trombone, a flugelhorn, baritones, tenor trombones, tubas, cornets and tenor horns.

Big bands used in swing and jazz will usually incorporate trumpets, tenor trombones and a bass trombone.

Brass Instruments Types

There are two families of brass musical instrument in modern music: valved and slide.

As the name suggests, valved instruments use a set of valves which the player operates with his fingers. Valves are usually piston valves, but may be rotary valves as in the case of tubas and horns (rotary valves require special care, for example they must be cleaned by an expert - see the cleaning section for further details). Most modern brass instruments are valved instruments, including the flugelhorn, cornet, trumpet, euphonium, French horn, tuba and tenor horn.

Slide instruments incorporate a slide to change the length of tubing, and thus raising and lowering the note. Trombones are the main family of slide instruments (bar the valve trombone, which is mostly used in jazz pieces).

Bugle

The bugle category of brass instruments incorporates bugles, trumpets, flugelhorns and cornets. There are subtle differences between these instruments in appearance, sound and playing technique. Buglists are sought after by brass bands, particularly military bands.

Trumpets

The trumpet is a popular choice of brass instrument. It is ideal for the beginner. Trumpets are used in a wide variety of music genres, which should help to keep learning interesting. Trumpets are convenient to transport and store and are relatively inexpensive.

Flugelhorn

Like the trumpet and cornet, the flugelhorn belongs to the bugle family of brass musical instruments. It is similar to the trumpet but its sound is slightly sweeter. Flugelhorns are widely used in a variety of music types, from classical to traditional brass band music, and are very popular in jazz.

Cornets

The cornet is similar to the trumpet, but with a slightly more melodic sound. Cornets are ideal for beginners because they are more compact than trumpets, which makes them easier to hold. Cornets are a vital component of a traditional brass band but, like the trumpet, their musical range is extensive. Cornets are relatively inexpensive to buy.

Euphoniums and Tubas

These instruments can be enormous and tend to be quite expensive. However, euphoniumists and tubist are becoming few and far between and so are always in demand. Tubas can be so big that you may struggle fitting it into the boot. Euphoniums are smaller scaled and have a wonderful range. These instruments are elementary to the classical symphony orchestra and the traditional brass band.

French Horn

A french horn is both a beauty to behold and a delight to the ear. A good French horn will be quite expensive and challenging to learn. French horn players quite a rarity. No classical orchestra would be complete without half a dozen, however, meaning that players are much in demand.

Trombone

Despite this instrument's impressive range, trombonists are becoming an endangered species! Though the trombone is a reasonably priced instrument, its slides are very delicate and must be handled with great care. The trombone is easy to learn and there is great demand for trombonists to play in classical, swing, jazz and traditional brass bands.

Trying to find out who manufactured the first guitars in America is no easy task. What is easy to find out is that there are dozens of guitar makers and they've all been around for quite some time. Everyone has their own preferences and artistic differences are what make each company successful. The list of guitar manufacturers is quiet long, though most people haven't heard of most manufacturers on the list. Some of the most popular and successful guitar manufactures have quite a story to tell and we will look at a few of the most famous guitar makers in the next few paragraphs.

One of the earliest versions of the guitar was made by Stradivarius, but even that version was a far cry from what we know to be the guitar today.

C.F. Martin and Company is believed to be the oldest guitar manufacturer in America, opening its doors around 1833 in Germany. But because violin makers thought that his guitars would run them out of business, Martin left Germany for America to open what would become one of the top manufacturers of all time. C. F. Martin and Co manufactures only acoustic guitars with the exception of their acoustic electric guitar. Their Dreadnought series is their best selling series and some guitarists like Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, Beck and Jimmy Buffett have said that these are the best guitars on the market. Some of their models retail for thousands of dollars. In 2000, Martin was manufacturing over 24 thousand guitars a year, a huge improvement from the 182 that he manufactured in 1900. They built their one-millionth guitar in 2004. The guitar boasts more than 40 encrusted rubies and diamonds and is estimated to be worth one million dollars.

Gibson is probably the next oldest American guitar manufacturer. Gibson Guitar Corporation is located in Nashville, Tennessee and began manufacturing musical instruments in 1902. Their first instrument was the mandolin. Gibson was manufacturing flat top acoustic guitars and one of the first hollow body acoustic guitars in the early 1930s. They introduced their first solid body electric guitar in 1950's and signed award winning guitarist Les Paul to endorse the Gibson Les Paul guitars. Gibson Guitar Corporation has become the number one electric guitar manufacturer in the industry. All Gibson Guitars are made in the United States and they are the largest guitar manufacturer in the U.S. Gibson was the first guitar maker to build the "green guitar". One of their most recent guitars uses robotic technology designed by Gibson and can tune itself in less than 10 seconds.

Fender definitely wasn't the first company to manufacture the electric guitar; Fender's were the most successful electric guitars to be mass produced. Fender was also successful in manufacturing and selling amplifiers. Fender's amps are some of the most sought after amps on the market today. In 1965 Fender sold out all their companies to CBS for 13 million dollars. Because CBS made many money saving changes to their products, sales took a drastic turn and demand for Fender guitars dropped. Finally in 1985 the employees of Fender purchased CBS's stake in the company and renamed the company Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.
